Aplastic anemia is a rare disorder in which the bone marrow does not produce enough red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets.

Common Symptoms

  • Fatigue and weakness
  • Shortness of breath
  • Frequent infections
  • Easy bruising or bleeding
  • Nose or gum bleeding
  • Small red or purple spots on the skin (petechiae)

Diagnosis

  • Complete Blood Count (CBC)
  • Peripheral Blood Smear
  • Bone Marrow Aspiration and Biopsy
  • Additional tests to identify the cause

Treatment

  • Blood transfusions, when required
  • Antibiotics to prevent or treat infections
  • Immunosuppressive medicines
  • Bone marrow (stem cell) transplant in suitable patients

When to consult

  • Persistent fatigue
  • Recurrent infections
  • Unexplained bruising or bleeding
  • Low blood counts on routine blood tests

Thalassemia Major is an inherited blood disorder in which the body cannot produce enough healthy hemoglobin. Children with this condition usually develop severe anemia within the first year of life and require lifelong medical care.

Common Symptoms

  • Severe anemia
  • Pale skin and tiredness
  • Poor growth
  • Enlarged spleen
  • Bone changes in severe cases
  • Complications related to iron overload

Diagnosis

  • Blood tests
  • Hemoglobin electrophoresis
  • Genetic testing, including parents’ Hb electrophoresis

Treatment

  • Regular blood transfusions
  • Iron chelation therapy to remove excess iron
  • Supportive care
  • Bone marrow transplantation (curative option)

When to consult

  • Early diagnosis and regular follow-up for healthy growth
  • To prevent complications
  • To improve quality of life

Hemophilia is an inherited bleeding disorder in which the blood does not clot properly because of a deficiency of clotting factors. This leads to prolonged bleeding after injuries and can also cause spontaneous bleeding into joints and muscles.

Common Symptoms

  • Frequent or prolonged bleeding
  • Easy bruising
  • Bleeding into joints causing pain and swelling
  • Excessive bleeding after surgery or dental procedures

Diagnosis

  • Blood tests measuring clotting factor levels

Treatment

  • Replacement of the missing clotting factor
  • Preventive therapy
  • Physiotherapy
  • Prompt management of bleeding episodes

When to consult

  • Early diagnosis and regular treatment to prevent permanent joint damage
  • To help individuals with hemophilia lead active, healthy lives

Acute Leukemia is a rapidly developing cancer of the blood. Abnormal white blood cells multiply quickly and interfere with the production of normal blood cells in bone marrow. Timely diagnosis and proper treatment are important for better prognosis.

Common Symptoms

  • Persistent fever
  • Fatigue and weakness
  • Frequent infections
  • Easy bruising or bleeding
  • Bone pain
  • Swollen lymph nodes

Diagnosis

  • Blood tests
  • Bone marrow examination
  • Immunophenotyping
  • Genetic studies

Treatment

  • Chemotherapy
  • Targeted therapy, where appropriate
  • Supportive care
  • Bone marrow transplantation in selected patients

When to consult

  • If leukemia is suspected, seek immediate hematologist evaluation
  • Early treatment significantly improves outcomes

Immune Thrombocytopenia (ITP) is a condition in which the body’s immune system mistakenly destroys its own platelets, leading to a low platelet count and an increased risk of bleeding.

Common Symptoms

  • Easy bruising
  • Tiny red or purple spots on the skin (petechiae)
  • Nosebleeds
  • Bleeding gums
  • Heavy menstrual bleeding (in females)
  • Bleeding after trauma

Diagnosis

  • Blood tests
  • Bone marrow examination
  • Clinical evaluation after excluding other causes of low platelet counts

Treatment

  • Observation, depending on platelet count and bleeding severity
  • Steroids
  • Immunotherapy
  • Medicines that increase platelet production

When to consult

  • Persistent low platelet counts
  • Unexplained bruising
  • Unusual bleeding
