FAQs

Questions patients ask.

For condition-specific information, see the patient education page.

A hematologist is a doctor who specializes in diagnosing and treating disorders of the blood, bone marrow, including anaemia, bleeding disorders, blood cancers, and clotting disorders.

You should consult a hematologist if you have persistent anaemia, abnormal blood counts, frequent infections, unusual bruising or bleeding, swollen lymph nodes, recurrent blood clots, or if your doctor recommends a specialist evaluation.

No. All abnormal blood test results are not caused by cancer. Many conditions such as infections, nutritional deficiencies, medications, or other medical illnesses can also affect blood counts. A hematologist can determine the underlying cause.

A bone marrow test helps diagnose certain blood disorders and blood cancers. It is usually performed under local anaesthesia. However it is not a surgery. While some patients may experience brief discomfort, the procedure is generally well tolerated.

Please bring all recent blood test reports (especially CBC), previous medical records, imaging reports (if available), biopsy or bone marrow slides and blocks (if any available), and a list of your past and current medications. This helps in accurate evaluation.

Not every patient requires a blood transfusion. The need depends on your blood counts, symptoms, and the underlying condition. Your hematologist will recommend a transfusion only when it is medically necessary.

Conditions mentioned below should be considered as a Medical Emergency. If you experience any of the below mentioned symptoms, seek immediate medical attention or visit the nearest emergency department without delay.

  • Uncontrolled bleeding
  • High fever during chemotherapy or very low white blood cell count
  • Sudden swelling or pain in one leg, chest pain, or difficulty breathing (possible blood clot)
  • Severe weakness, dizziness, or breathlessness due to anaemia
  • Severe pain crisis
  • Severe reaction during or after a blood transfusion
